Activities at Kiilopää

Hiking, Cross-Country Skiing and Snowshoe Trekking

  • There are around 200 kilometres of marked summer trails and cross-country skiing tracks in the area. 35 kilometres of the network is illuminated. Some of the trails on the network, approx. 70 km, take you through the Urho Kekkonen National Park. Trails and tracks depart from the courtyard of Fell Centre Kiilopää.
  • On the Ahopää hill is a marked 6-kilometre long snowshoe trekking trail. The trail begins from the Fell Centre courtyard. During summertime, the same trail is used as a nature trail: along the trail you will find information board telling of Arctic flora and fauna. An information booklet for the trail may be rented from the reception of Fell Centre Kiilopää.

Smoke Sauna

  • The smoke sauna is heated at least once a week for the public, three times a week during high seasons. A sauna ticket costs 9 €/person or 8 €/person for Fell Centre residents. Swimming/winter swimming in the hill stream is free of charge.

Nordic Walking

  • The surrounding nature is ideal for Nordic walking. Nordic walking sticks may be hired from the Fell Centre.

Urho Kekkonen National Park

  • The National Park is located right next to Fell Centre Kiilopää. Walking/Nordic walking, skiing and snowshoe trekking are all permitted in the park. The park is also ideal for longer hikes: there are 42 cabins in the park for at the disposal of visitors. Some cabins are locked and require advance reservation. It is also strongly recommended that groups planning a hike contact the Koilliskaira Visitor Centre before their departure: in this way, possible overlapping of cabin use, overcrowding of campsites, and so on, is avoided (tel. +358 205 64 7251, www.luontoon.fi). Reservations for cabins should be made via the Koilliskaira Visitor Centre. Keys for the huts can be obtained from the reception of Fell Centre Kiilopää.
  • Fishing permits for the National Park can be bought for example from Kiehinen visitor centre in Saariselkä (16 km north from Kiilopää): Kiehinen is situated in the same building, Siula, with the tourist information point (tel. +358 205 64 7200).

Safaris

  • Fell Centre Kiilopää is also a booking agency for a variety of safaris: husky, snowmobile, reindeer and ice fishing safaris. In addition, gold panning trips, canoeing trips, rubber rafting, trips to the village of Inari and Lake Inarijärvi may be booked through the Fell Centre.

Sámi Museum Siida and Gold Village Tankavaara

  • Siida Museum is located in Inari Village, about 80 km north of Kiilopää. The museum is open all year round and during summertime the open-air museum is also open to the public. (www.siida.fi)
